Through engaging in creative movement and speech practices, working with image and metaphor and paying attention to our sensory experience we’ll invite stories which emerge from the rich landscape of our bodies. We’ll also look at how our physical language relates to our spoken language and how movement can generate the content of our stories. At the end of the weekend each participant will perform their unique story to the group.

This workshop is open to everyone and no previous storytelling experience is required.

This workshop is for people with experience of practising Action Theatre or/and performers.

Once we get to improvising with language all kinds of mythologies arise. We begin to feel that we must be smart, we must make sense, that somehow our language-ing must be better. We want to become somebody other than who we are and what we are feeling at the time. This workshop is designed to tear apart those myths; to bring us back to “who” the moment language arises; return to our vulnerability, to the stumbling, blubbing fools that fill our hearts and heads and to use our struggle as a source of joy.

Specifically we will work on:

• Turning “I don’t know” into vibrant, endless imagery
• Confession as a tool for developing content
• Being satisfied with less
• Flipping dis-belief into naming the present
• Simultaneous Monologues
• Collaborative monologues
• Merging and Diverging Monologues
• Shifting between Simultaneous Solos and Direct Dialogue

In this workshop we will explore improvisation using movement and language as a performance practice.

We will work with simple focuses of attention, develop a sense of texture and explore skills in the transformation of language forms into movement forms and vice versa. Emphasis will be given to the skills attached to the performer following their own interests and pleasure in performance. These methods lead to a clarified understanding of personal aesthetics and create a space for participants to develop their own “style” in the use of language and movement.  In addition to these skills there will be regular opportunities to perform during the workshop.

Participants should come expecting to enjoy themselves!

During this workshop we will warm up our body, breath and voice and practice simple improvisational exercises which heighten our sensory awareness and encourage us to respond in the moment to our internal and external landscapes.  We will work solo and with partners, develop our collaborative skills and practise shifting between different physical, emotional and vocal qualities.  We will experience how vocal sounds can transform into words and language and discover ways to open the doors of our imagination so that our expression is new, embodied and alive.

Through paying attention to our ever-changing sensations, moods and imagination we will explore the creative potential of our bodies and voice. We’ll expand our listening skills and our ability to respond in the moment – developing a sense of connectedness to ourselves and others.  We’ll also play with the sounds of speech – sourcing words from our bodies rather than our thinking mind.

There will be opportunities to watch each other practise throughout the 2 days.
